After having dinner with Martin, I wished him well and said goodbye. Despite the bad weather, I planned to take the ferry to the next island on my own the following day. This meant getting up very early and cycling for about an hour to the ferry terminal.

But the weather turned out even worse than expected. Long story short: I didn’t make it.

I had to leave my apartment anyway. The whole day I tried to reach Martin - unsuccessfully.

I knew he had an extra bed in his apartment, so I stopped by the place he’d shown me and knocked on the door. No answer.

By 9 PM, still having heard nothing, I decided to book my own apartment with the same landlord. To my surprise, I ran into Martin in the hallway! He had moved to a different apartment because the Wi-Fi in his original one wasn’t working. His new place was right above mine. He had kept his phone off all day because it was his birthday, and he doesn’t like celebrating. We ended up having pasta together, and he mentioned he might join me the next day on the ride to Mali Lošinj, a town at the southern tip of the island. That made me happy. My new plan was to catch a ferry from there to Zadar, luckily scheduled for the next day when the weather was expected to improve.

The following day, Cres sent us off with a rainbow.

The drizzle stopped, and the sun finally appeared. The ride was fantastic, and having company made it even better. We reached the ferry to Zadar, where we were supposed to part ways.

Or maybe not? Martin caught some of my enthusiasm. I had been raving about Durmitor National Park in Montenegro. Though I’d never been there, I’d seen a presentation full of stunning images and had researched it online - it seemed like a must-visit. The next morning, in our hostel in Zadar, Martin spontaneously said he could see himself joining me on the trip to Durmitor. “Sure!” I said, excited. It will probably take longer than a week. Having company for a few days will be nice.

I hadn’t been looking for a travel companion, but I found one.
